Gateway Gallery in Clayton presents its January exhibit, “Sunrise-Sunset,” featuring the work of gallery member Meg Matson. The exhibit runs Jan. 4 through Feb. 17. The artist’s reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 20 also marks the grand opening of Gateway Gallery’s new location at 21 N. Bemiston. Guest artist Lisa Crisman will be showing pastel landscapes.
Matson is traditionally a non-representational, abstract painter. However, the pieces in “Sunrise-Sunset” represent a distinct departure in their more representational quality. “I have never seen an ugly sunset,” Matson said as she described her inspiration behind this collection. “Some naturally are more striking than others, but they are always beautiful and rejuvenating.” “Beautiful” is a term Matson rarely hears in reference to her art. She is more accustomed to “energetic” or “thought-provoking.” But Matson says her goal with this exhibit was to simply create something beautiful that the viewer can enjoy. “Not every piece needs to make a profound statement,” she said. “Sometimes just allowing the viewer to enjoy the painting and create their own moment of Zen is much more important.”
Growing up, Matson had unlimited supply to a necessary medium: paper. Her father was a paper salesman whose career ultimately assisted Matson with her future as an artist. This unlimited amount of paper, along with household items, helped her imaginatively construct her first pieces. Although trained through classes, books and workshops in traditional oil methods, she maintains her own style and carefully limits the influence of others.
Established in 2004, Gateway Gallery is a co-op art gallery exhibiting 16 regional, award-winning artists whose work range from traditional landscape to contemporary abstraction. Ranging media include oil, pastel, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, photography, ceramics, and woodworking. Exhibits typically run every six weeks, featuring one of the gallery’s 16 artists as well as three visiting artists. Located in downtown Clayton, Mo., the gallery is walking distance to other galleries and many of St. Louis’ finest restaurants and cafés, making it a “must-stop” destination for art lovers, art collectors and designers.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. To 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. To 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. To 5 p.m. Sunday. Visit www.GatewayGalleryOnline.com for more information.
